My Thoughts
November is Epilepsy Awareness Month and as a person that has suffered from epilepsy for three years, I wanted to share with others some of the stuff Ive went through and how to help people with this disorder. I was diagnosed with epilepsy three years ago. It came out of no where and has really changed my life. I had to quit my job, had to take a break from college, give up driving, and basically change everything. It turned my life upside down and for a long time, I had to take medications that lowered my intelligence, zapped my creativity, and made me into a zombie.
I didnt feel safe going out into public by myself because I didnt know when a seizure would strike. My family and many of my friends tried to be supportive but they didnt understand what I was going through. Epilepsy is a hard disorder to understand and honestly, there has been a lot of stigma behind it throughout history. People with epilepsy were accused of being demon possessed not even a hundred years ago, and it still happens today.
A little over a year ago, I started looking into natural ways to overcome this disorder. I stopped eating a lot of sugary foods and drinks, cut back on my meat consumption, cut out all MSG and artificial sweeteners and started taking herbal supplements such as valerian and skullcap. Thankfully, this radical change in my diet and lifestyle helped to greatly reduce the number of seizures I had and I was eventually able to quit taking the horrible medications. This type of change doesnt work for everyone with epilepsy, so I am very thankful that it worked for me.
I have to be very careful with my diet and my lifestyle choices today so I wont start having seizures again. If I make poor decisions during the day and eat bad or expose myself to flashing or flickering lights, then that night I was definitely experience a seizure. It is something I constantly struggle with, I start thinking that I can be like everyone else and not worry about what I eat or where I go, but when I try that, I have a seizure.
Epilepsy has changed my life forever. I wish that more people could understand what people with seizures go through. Many people think it is funny, and Ive had people make jokes about my epilepsy as if I should laugh about it. I have a positive attitude about my disorder but it isnt very funny to me. I also hate how people, even here on DA, make flashing images and post them calling them Free Seizure or something stupid like that. Trust me, you dont want a to ever experience a seizure. Plus, when I see a flashing image like that, it causes me to have a seizure, or if Im lucky, a migraine headache.
Anyways, the reason that I wrote this is because I want people to be more aware of what epilepsy is and what people go through with it. Below is a list of links about epilepsy if you want more information. Thank you for reading.
